Rape Myths

by Kevin Caruso

Myth:

A woman can provoke rape by the way she dresses and acts.

Fact:

A woman has the right to dress and act how she wants. The fault of the rape is on the rapist, he was the one who committed the crime.

Myth:

Only attractive women are raped.

Fact:

Anyone can be raped, young or old, attractive or unattractive.

Although it is true that most of the women who are raped are under the age of 25, ANYONE can be raped.

A few blocks from where I live, an 85 year old woman was recently raped by a criminal who gained entry through an open women.

Do not let your guard down. Always be careful. Criminals have no conscience. Again, anyone can be raped.

And although it is much less common than the rape of females, men are also raped.

Myth:

If a woman does not resist, she was not raped.

Fact:

Whether a person resists or not during ANY crime is not relevent, the fact is that a crime was still committed.

Women who are raped are extremely scared, shocked, and traumatized, and whether they choose to, or even can resist, is entirely irrelevant to the fact that a horrific, violent, inexcusable crime has been committed.

Myth:

Most women are raped by strangers

Fact:

The vast majority of rapes are perpetrated by men who know the victim, such as a husband, boyfriend, family member, relative, friend, or acquaintance.

Myth:

A husband can do what he wants when he is in bed with his wife, so you can never say that a husband actually rapes his wife. They are married aren’t they?

Fact:

That is like saying that since two people are married, one person can slash the other person with a knife simply because they are married.

No man has a right to rape wife. Period. It is unethical, it is inexcusable, and it is a crime.

Myth:

Some women enjoy being raped.

Fact:

This represents a sick mindset. It is akin to saying some people enjoy getting shot. It is an idiotic statement that rapists may use to try to pass the blame on the victim.

No one enjoys being assaulted.

Myth:

There were no cuts or bruises, therefore there was no rape.

Fact:

It does not matter whether there were cuts or bruises. A rape is a rape. Period.

Myth:

It was just sex. Women get over this stuff quickly.

Fact:

It was not just “sex.” It was a rape – a violent act against a woman who did not consent to being touched in any way.

And no, women don’t get over this “stuff” quickly. A rape is more than “stuff” – it is a violent crime; and some rape victims die by suicide because of being raped; others may suffer clinical depression, insomnia, eating disorders, anxiety, phobias, and innumerable other problems.

Rape is extremely traumatic.

Myth:

Sometimes men just lose control because they have a much stronger sex drive than women. After all, their sexual behavior is driven by testosterone.

Fact:

No man ever “loses control.” A man CHOOSES to commit the crime of rape. And rape is NEVER caused by high testosterone levels.

Myth:

Rape is all about sex. The man just needed to have sex with someone.

Fact:

Rape is NOT about sex. Rape is an act of VIOLENCE and CONTROL.

Myth:

The woman changed her mind, so it is not rape.

Fact:

If a woman says “no” or “stop” at any juncture, those words mean NO or STOP – and a man is VIOLATING and RAPING a woman if he does not stop.

Some men begin to do things that a woman does not want to do while they are intimate, and if the man continues while the woman tells him not to, then what WAS consensual becomes RAPE.

Just because a woman is in bed with a man does not allow the man to do what he wants without her consent.

Myth:

If there was no vaginal penetration, there was no rape or sexual assault.

Fact:

Rape is defined by the law in many ways. Non-consensual penetration of the vagina is only ONE type of rape. Nonconsensual penetration of the anus or mouth is also rape.

Rapists also sometimes use objects to penetrate a woman’s vagina, anus, or mouth; which are all very serious crimes.

And a man who touches a woman in any sexual manner against the woman’s will has committed a sexual assault.

Myth:

A man that takes a woman on a date and spends a lot of money on her has a “right” to sex.

Fact:

A man never has a “right” to rape a woman. Whether or not a man spends money on a woman has no bearing on any type of activity that a woman would consent to after the date. If a woman does not consent, it is rape. Period.

Myth:

If a woman asks a man into her apartment or house, she is consenting to have sex with him. After all, she did let him in. What was she thinking?

Fact:

A man could enter a woman’s apartment or house for numerous reasons. There is NO implied consent for RAPE just because he enters the residence. That is an utterly sick mindset. SPECIFIC consent is required for sexual activity. Consent to enter a residence is no more than that – consent to enter a residence.

Myth:

If a woman is raped, it is better for her not to report it because the judicial process will be brutal.

Fact:

Although the judicial process SOMETIMES is brutal, a woman should ALWAYS report rape so the criminal can be brought to justice and the criminal will be prevented from raping others.
